I don’t talk about this much on the blog, but last school year was my first time NOT to have a full time job. Sure, I worked in the evenings tutoring math online, and I sold the coolest kids’ books ever (Usborne books are the bees knees!) here and there, and I worked on my blog for a few extra bucks, and I wrote and continued revising a script with my husband – but other than ALL THAT, I’ve mostly been a “Stay At Home Mom” for the past year. (I feel too busy to be what I thought a SAHM was supposed to be like though, but whatever. I digress…)
Point being. I don’t get out much. I don’t dress very cool.
But I WANT to be cool. I just don’t have the time or energy to think about what I wear or go shopping or research latest fashions. While ThredUp (see my last post! woohoo ThredUp!) keeps me at least mildly fashionable-ish for cheap – they don’t sell accessories like jewelry. Which I so desperately need!
Other than the few actual “nice” pieces of jewelry I own (my pearls, cause you gotta have pearls; my wedding ring; my two pairs of “real” gem earrings), everything else I have is a decade old and bought from Forever 21. And I suppose I’m probably too old for that now. Sigh. They lied to me. I guess I can’t be 21 for forever after all. I hope their pants are on fire now too.
Sigh. Anyways. Somewhere recently I discovered this amazing new thing in my life: Rocksbox. (In my head, I hear a chorus signing whenever I say the name: Raaaaaachsss….Baaaaachsss….)
Rocksbox. Cause it’s exactly what I need in my life. And I’m here to tell you about it and give you my Rocksbox review.
It’s a “subscription box” service. Sort of. Basically, you pay $19 a month to rent jewelry. You take a survey so they know what you like, you add some styles you like to your wish list, and then they send you three pieces of jewelry. You can wear them for as long or as little as you’d like. When you send the box back, you get three more pieces of jewelry. And then you wear them, send them back when you want, get more jewelry, yada yada, ad infinitum.
I’ve been able to try 6 pieces of jewelry so far – get this, for FREE! Eek. How cool, right? Well, ok, ok, you only get the first month free (& only if you use my code: RonniBFF10), but I’m three days out from my free trail month being up and I think I’m going to pay to keep it going.
Want to try it out and get your first month FREE too? Go here: https://www.rocksbox.com and use my code: RonniBFF10. I think I only have this code for the first 3 people, so if you wanna try it, don’t dawdle. Oh, and just like my ThredUp review, I was not paid to say any of this. This is all on me, since I think Rocksbox is super cool and want to tell you about it too.
Here’s what it looks like when you get a box:
Rocksbox Set #1 – July 9
It comes with an explanation of what the stylist decided to send you.
I got some earrings, a bracelet, and a necklace.
I am just so hip in my new jewelry, aren’t I? 🙂
I wore them for about 3 weeks before deciding to send them back in. By the way, if you LOVE a piece of jewelry, you can choose to purchase it for a discount. Plus, every month, you get $10 “Shine credit” you can use on a single piece of jewelry to lower the already discounted price.
I considered buying the earring set for $20, but would’ve never worn the spike pair. Oh, and I fell in love with the bracelet!! I’m still thinking about buying it at some point, but it would’ve been $36 will all the discounts and I can’t stomach paying that much for a bracelet. But oh…I really liked it. I might still buy it someday.
Rocksbox Set #2 – July 29
I mailed my first set back on Saturday; I got the next set on Friday. So almost a week. Not a bad turnaround. In my second set, I also got a necklace, a pair of earrings, and a bracelet.
I like the necklace, and it’s a style I’d wanted to try not. I’m not sure I’m sold on it yet. But I’ll keep wearing it for awhile to be sure. My 4.5yr old daughter was my photographer helper and took this picture of me. Also, let’s just pretend that I’m not wearing the exact. same. outfit. that I wore in the pictures from my first Rocksbox set, ok? I told you this was the quintessential Ronni summer shirt!
I like the design of the earrings, but having experienced the turquoise color of the my previous set’s earrings, I think I might prefer some color, and these seem a bit bland. Still, I’m going to keep wearing them and see if they grow on me or not.
The bracelet. The big, chunky bracelet. Eh, I knew immediately it wasn’t for me. It was big, and clunky, and doesn’t go with anything I own and just isn’t me at all. It’s definitely being sent back. My daughter however, loved it and thought it was the greatest thing ever and wanted to wear it. She gave it a thumbs up.
Then she wanted to put it on Little Foot and use my fancy camera to take a picture. So I let her. Because she’s cute.
Even though this second set was not quite as much as a love at first sight as my first box was, I still super love the Rocksbox service, I think! I don’t know how long I’ll keep this set before sending them back, but either way, I really enough getting to try out jewelry. Unlike other fashion boxes for clothing like StitchFix – I get to actually WEAR this jewelry as much as I want before sending it back. I’m SUPPOSED to use it! And it’s ok! And that to me is super cool.
And also, yes, it feels sustainable and environmental and hip to not waste resources, but to instead share them with others and only purchase what I actually need. (I’m ever-so-slowly starting to care about these things. Ever. So. Slowly.)
If you’re interested in trying Rocksbox, you should go for it! And if you use my code – RonniBFF – you’ll get a FREE month (you do have to put in credit card info when you sign up, but just mark on your calendar when you need to cancel by) and I’ll get some referral credit so that maybe I can actually buy that blue beaded bracelet from last month that I’m in love with. 🙂
